Climbing peaks, building connections: Spring Summit 2025
This past weekend, we hosted our annual Butterfly Data Spring Summit - and for many of the Butterfly team, it’s already become a highlight of the year.
Led this year by our very own Jonny Murray, the team took on a 7-mile hike through the stunning Peak District on Saturday, tackling three peaks including the iconic Mam Tor, and a stop at the Blue John Cavern. The sun was shining, the views were spectacular, and the team spirit was stronger than ever. From experienced hikers to complete first-timers, everyone looked out for each other along the way, proving that support and camaraderie aren’t just office values, but part of who we are.
The weekend began on Friday evening with a stay at a local YHA hostel, complete with a shared home-cooked meal (thank you, Martin Shine!), board games, and a true back-to-basics bonding experience. It was a far cry from the typical team-building sessions with no awkward icebreakers, just real, relaxed connection. And that’s exactly why it worked.
On Sunday, the adventure continued with a climbing and abseiling activity, where team members were encouraged to push their boundaries, whether that meant scrambling up a rockface or leaning back over the edge for the first time. The group cheered each other on with energy and support and it was a reminder of how trust, bravery, and teamwork can go hand-in-hand.
For some, the weekend was a step outside their usual comfort zone. But that challenge made the experience all the more meaningful (and surprisingly enjoyable!) proving that growth often happens when we push past the familiar.
This year’s Spring Summit also happened to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week and Month, which is a fitting reminder of the connection between physical activity, nature, and mental wellbeing. The fresh air, good conversation, and shared challenge all came together to show just how powerful a weekend away from screens can be.
At Butterfly, we’re committed to mental health and wellbeing, not just in principle, but in practice. Alongside events like the Spring Summit, our support includes:
Signing the Mental Health at Work Commitment (and following through on it)
Monthly 1:1 check-ins with mentors, plus a Buddy scheme for peer support
Four trained Mental Health First Aiders (with a 50/50 gender split)
Access to Wellness Days, Compassionate Leave, and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), including private mental health cover
In an increasingly remote world, weekends like this remind us how important it is to create space for real human connection, community, and looking after both body and mind.
So, here’s to looking forward to Spring Summit 2026, and to a team that continues to show up for one another, on and off the trail.
